Adopt a Bobolink pair

While the Ontario government grants us, as farmers, the right to destroy the sole habitat for the Bobolinks and Eastern Meadowlarks, (while it continues to study the situation), it seems to us that a bird that travels a 20,000km miration, to return to the field where they were born, deserve a little dignity.

Here is your opportunity to help change the world and sustain a mating pair of bobolinks for the 2018 season, and help reserve and preserve the boblinks refugee camp. Supporters will be invited to a field days during the peak nesting season for some education, some photography, and a chance to experience! We are committed, and your contribution will help sustain our efforts.

You will also conserve the Eastern Meadowlark and the Savannah Sparrow, all of whom share the habitat.

Bobolinks

The Bobolink and the Eastern Meadowlark are the two grassland birds that are listed as threatened by both Ontario Government and the Federal Government. Their primary habitats are hay fields and meadows. Unfortuately for them, their nesting season coincides with the hay season. While the Endangered Species Act prohibit the killing, harming, and harassing of Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark as well as the damaging or destroying of their habitat, it is ironic that there is a provincial exemption that permits farmers to do that very thing.

We feel that having the Bobolinks and Eastern Meadow larks in our fields is an honour,a privelage and a responsability. Each year we set aside a 14 acre field for their habitat reserve. It has been found that larger fields ( above 5-10 acres) support much higher densitites of nesting birds. Once hay season starts, our resident popuation soars, making me think that we're running an avian refugee camp, rather than a santuary. It furthermore makes me believe that we should have a Habitat at Risk Act, rather that an Species at Risk Act.

A study by the USDA., states that "...more than 90 percent of Bobolinks and Savannah sparrows returned to the field in which they nested in the previous year." This means that saving the bobolinks this year is an investment with compounding returns!
